Dropadot is built to collect as little as possible. Here is exactly what we do and don't collect.
What we collect
- The text you choose to post
- An approximate location for your dot — rounded to about 100 meters of precision before it ever leaves your browser. The full GPS coordinates from your phone or laptop are never sent to our servers.
- Anything you draw on the daily canvas (the strokes only — not anything that identifies you)
- If you submit a piece to the museum: the information you choose to enter on the submission form (your name, the title of the work, year, a short bio, an optional link) and the image file itself
- Basic technical data your browser sends automatically (IP address, browser type), used only to keep the site running and prevent abuse
What we don't collect
- Your name, email, or any account information (we don't have accounts)
- Your precise GPS coordinates — we round them on your device before sending anything, so we never have the exact value at all
- Any tracking across other sites
- Any data sold or shared with advertisers
About location specifically
Sharing where you are can feel uncomfortable, so here is exactly what we do with it.
- Your phone or browser asks for permission before sharing your location. You can deny it — you'll still be able to browse and read everything, you just can't drop a dot or shoot a flare.
- The moment we receive your coordinates, we round them to 3 decimal places. That's about a 100-meter square — enough to know which neighborhood you're in, but too coarse to identify a building, a home, or your exact location.
- The rounded value is what's used to place your dot, look up the city name, and store the entry. The full-precision value never leaves your device.
- The map's maximum zoom level is capped so that even if someone tried to look up your dot, they cannot zoom in close enough to see street-level detail.
- Your dot is deleted at midnight UTC each day along with everything else you posted that day.
How long we keep it
Most things you post — dots, messages, flares, casts — are deleted at midnight UTC each day.
The drawing canvas is the one exception. When the day ends, that day's collective canvas is preserved as a public artwork. Only the strokes, the colors, and the date are kept. Nothing that identifies you (no IP address, no device ID, no name, no location) is stored alongside the drawings. The active canvas resets to blank for the next day's contributors, but the previous days' artwork remains.
Museum submissions are also kept beyond the daily reset. A piece stays on the wall for an extended period — there is no fixed display duration. The name, title, year, bio, link, and image you submitted remain on the site for as long as the piece is hung. You can request removal of your own submission at any time by contacting us.
Technical logs (like IP addresses) are kept for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention, then deleted.
Who we share it with
No one, beyond the technical providers required to run the site (our hosting provider). We never sell or share data with advertisers, data brokers, or third parties.
Your rights
Because we don't have accounts, we don't have a user record to delete on request. If you believe a specific dot should be removed, contact us and we will take it down.
Cookies
Dropadot uses minimal cookies, only for the site to function. We do not use tracking cookies or analytics cookies that follow you across sites.

Dropadot is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
